He was the son of George and Phoebe Hill and the brother of Mary, George, Arthur and Maria Hill. In 1921, they lived at 60, Church Street, Eastwood.
By 7 October 1945, the Second World War had ended, and the Pioneer Corps (later granted the “Royal” prefix in 1946) was transitioning from frontline combat support to massive post-war demobilisation, reconstruction, and logistics operations across Europe and the globe.
