Military history

KANCHANABURI WAR CEMETERY 6. F. 2. Thailand

On May 29th, 1945, the original 1/5th (Derbyshire) Battalion, Sherwood Foresters no longer existed as an active combat unit, as the surviving men were held as Prisoners of War (POWs) in Japanese captivity following the fall of Singapore in 1942. On this specific date, many of its soldiers were enduring brutal forced labor or dying from disease and starvation along the notorious Burma-Siam Death Railway.
