Born in the Republic of Ireland he studied at Cork University and the Northern Ireland Unicversity. He is listed in the UK and Ireland Medical Register of 1936 as being registered as a medical practitioner on 29th January 1935. Qualifications MB, Bch,BAO. ( Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (from the latin Baccalaureus Chirurgiea) and Bachelor of Obstetrics).

Family history

Son of Pierce Burgess and of Mary Burgess (nee O'Mahoney) of 17 Gillabbey Terrace, Cork Ireland.
Siblings: Twins Pierce and Teddy born in 1903. Pierce went to live and work in America in 1925 and became an American citizen. Teddy (full name Timothy ) also became a doctor and came to England to live and work. In 1939 Teddy was living at 33 Windsor Rd, Mansfield and aswell as being a GP he was an APR warden in charge of the High Oakham Ambulance section.
Denis married Eleanor Mary Quirke in Cork in 1940, their daughter Eleanor was born in 1942.
In 1939 Denis was living as a border at 11 St John's Street, Mansfield.
He left £3687 16s 5d to his widow Eleanor of 16 Clipstone Avenue, Mansfield and to Timothy Burgess medical practitioner.

Military history

He had been made a lieutenant on 23rd June 1941.
On 3rd July 1948 Denis was awarded the 1939-45, Africa, Italy, France, Germany war medal.
