Educated at Nottingham High School, he became assistant lighting supervisor for Nottingham.

He revived the Nottingham Gliding Club and, whilst obtainig a final gliding certificate in Germany, became a guest of the German Air Ministry at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

In 1936, he was appointed as technical advisor at the Royal Aircraft institute Farnborough on aerodynamics, obtaining at this time a BSc AFRAeS.

Family history

He was the son of James Barrington Sowerbutts and Annie Sowerbutts of 21, Littlegreen Road, Woodthorpe, Nottingham.

Military history

Feeling his work could be undertaken by an older man, he applied to join the RAF. His first application in 1943 was refused but he was accepted at Cranwell for pilot training in 1944. (Source: Nottingham Evening Post 1/6/1945)

He was the pilot of Lancaster I NG119 which took off 2128 2 Feb 1945 from Fiskerton. Crashed at Kautenbach on the Wiltz River 13 km NNW of Ettelbruck Luxembourg. No survivors. Fatalities: Sowerbutts+ Melvin Douglas Groundwater (FE), Henry John Knightbridge (WO), Gordon Lester (AG), Henry John O'Connor (AB), Herbert Walter Porter (N) & Ronald Ernest Streatfield (AG).
