Peter Ralph Cherrington (24 November 1917 – 20 January 1945) was an English cricketer active in 1938 who played for Leicestershire. He was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire and died in Burma during the Second World War. He appeared in ten first-class matches as a right-handed batsman who scored 85 runs with a highest score of 33.

Family history

He was the son of George Esam Cherrington and Kate Elsie Cherrington of Rectory Lane, Averham, Nottinghamshire.

Military history

On the night 4/5 January 1945 Capt Cherrington's company was sent to capture the water supply at Hlwede near Dudalin which was vital to the battalions operations against Dudalin. The Japanese were well dug in but the company infiltrated the positions and took them with a final charge. The company held their ground against several counter attacks until reinforce by the rest of the battalion.
During the assault against Dudalin 8 January he again infiltrated the enemy positions again cutting off their water supply causing them to move out of the eastern part of the town. He and a one man escort went to the aid of a cable laying party and another party carrying casualties, organising a counter attack and driving off the enemy personally kill 3 of them in the process. During that night he led a company of Ghurkas to an advantageous position, again causing the enemy to evacuate the area. D.S.O Gazetted 19/4/1945.
