Family history

He was the son of John Frederick and Ethel Spence. Kenneth Spence and Ena Ivett were married at Nottingham in 1939 and their son John was born in 1942. They lived at Wollaton, Nottingham.

Nottingham Evening Post 16/1/1945, page 2: 'Missing. Spence- Flight-Lieutenant Kenneth, DFC, darling husband Ena and daddy of John, reported missing January 9th, British Columbia. Hoping and praying that you are safe.'

Military history

On 9 January 1945 Liberator VI KH173 of 5 OTU RCAF did not return from a training flight over the Pacific Ocean and was thought to have crashed in the sea off Bell Island, about 10 miles north of Port Hardy, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The eleven men aboard were all lost. Eleven RAF men are commemorated on the Ottawa Memorial for 9 January 1945, and are probably the crew of KH173.
