Thomas Leslie was the son of Herbert and Eleanor Hartley (née Smith).
His father Herbert was born in Lea, Lincolnshire, in 1884 and his mother Eleanor in Hubblesthorpe, Nottinghamshire, also in 1884. They were married in 1913 (reg. East Retford) and had three children, Edwyn Herbert (b. December 1914 reg 1915), Thomas Leslie (b. 1917) and Clarice May (b. 7 April 1920) who were all born in North Leverton.
In 1921 Herbert, a farmer/employer, his wife and their three children were living in Habblesthorpe.
At the time the England & Wales Register was compiled in 1939, Herbert and Eleanor were living at Coates, North Leverton. Only two of their children were recorded in the home, Edwyn Hartley who, like his father, was a farmer, and Clarice whose occupation was given as 'unpaid domestic duties', presumably assisting her mother in the home.
Thomas has not yet been traced on the 1939 Register, but an Army Casualty list notes that in 1941 Thomas was residing in Nottinghamshire.
Thomas died in 10 December 1944, presumably in the UK as he is buried in North Leverton St Martin churchyard. His parents are buried in the same grave; his father Herbert died on 10 March 1953 and his mother Eleanor on 23 November 1982. Eleanor's daughter, Clarice (m. 1942, Tuddenham) predeceased her mother (d. 14 August 1978).
Thomas Leslie died on 10 December 1944 while on active service and is buried in North Leverton St Martin churchyard.
