He was the son of Thomas and Louisa Bamford and the brother of Thomas, Emily, Gladys, Doris and Sydney Frederick Bamford. In 1939, they lived at 112, Birkin Avenue, Radford, Nottingham.
In September 1944, the 4th (Hallamshire) Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment (the polar bears') commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel T. Hart Dyke, fought in North-West Europe as part of the 146th Infantry Brigade, 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division, advancing through France and into Belgium where they crossed the Antwerp-Turnhout Canal and engaged in fierce battles and held bridgeheads on the northern bank under enemy artillery exchanges. On 29 September 1944, the battalion launched a heavy assault against a heavily fortified German position at the Dépôt de Mendicité in Belgium.
Corporal John William Harper of the Hallamshire Battalion was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for extreme bravery during this 29 September assault, where he led his section across open, exposed ground against entrenched enemy fire and took command of his platoon after his commander was wounded.
