Son of Stanley and Catherine Haslam, of Rochdale, Lancashire.
James married Mavis Roberta Lander in Mansfield on 7th September 1944 so they were only married for 12 days before James's death. Mavis had been born in October 1925 so she was only 18 years old when she was widowed. She married Ronald Marriott in 1947 and lived to 2015.

Military history

Battle of Nijmegen 17-20/9/1944 part of Operation Market Garden.
The primary goal was to take the 2 bridges over the river Waal at Nijmegen, the road bridge anf railay bridge. They met intense German defences and the taking of the bridges stalled. On the 19th the Allies redoubled their efforts to take the bridges. The bridges were taken on the 20th but the Germans kept trying to destroy the bridges to stop the Allied advance from the Netherlands into Germany.
