Son of William and Ellen Burdett, of 68 Sandhurst Avenue,Mansfield
Siblings: Doris born in 1919 and George born in 1921.
John married Florence Maragaret Frith in 1942 and they lived at 88 Union Street, Mansfield. They had no children and Florence married Claude Randall in 1952. Florence had worked as a cashier at a wine and spirit merchants before her marriage.
MV Pinto: a rescue ship.
At 05.51 hours U-482 fired a torpedo at convoy HX-305 north-northeast of Tory Island (off the north west coast of Ireland) hitting Empire Heritage, a tanker. A further 2 torpedoes were fired at 05.59 and a t 06.37 hours she started to sink. MV Pinto was picking up surviors when she was hit. The master of the Pinto along with 8 crew members, 6 gunners, a signal man and 2 men rescued from the Empire Heritage were lost. 29 crew men, 8 gunners, the surgeaon, 2 sick bay attendants and a signalman were rescued and were taken to Londonderry.
