Family history

Fred Gregory Fletcher was born in 1882 at Ripley he was the son of the late William a joiner and Maria Fletcher née Bradshaw of Elm Cottage, Ripley

His father William was born in 1843 at Ripley he died in 1913 aged 70 yrs his mother Maria Bradshaw was born in 1842 at Buckland Hold, Derbyshire, they were married on 8th June 1870 at Pentrich, Derbyshire, they had 7 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Elm Cottage, Ripley, William 68 yrs is a retired joiner, he is living with his wife Maria 69 yrs and their children, Hilda 36 yrs Herbert Edward 30 yrs a blind maker and Fred Gregory 29 yrs a compositor.

His brother, John lived at 1 Goldsmith Street, Mansfield.

Military history

Sergeant Fred Gregory Fletcher enlisted at Nottingham 15th May 1915. aged 33 years and 2 months, his address was Nottingham Road, Ripley, he was a compositor. He served with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was appointed Lance Corporal 6th August 1915, Lance Sergeant 27th October 1915 and Sergeant 15th January 1916. He went to France 6th March 1916 and was killed in action 20th May 1916, age 34. Buried: Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France. Plot III, Row S, Grave 2.
