He attended the Sir, Fredk. Milner School, Retford, and later was employed by British Ropes, Ltd. When he was 17 he volunteered for the R.A.F. On attaining the age of 18 he was called up for service.

He was the son of Frederick and Millicent Wilkinson of 3, Poplar Street, Retford, Nottinghamshire

Military history

Lancaster I LM262 took off 2105 7 Aug 1944 from East Kirkby to bomb an enemy strong point. Three of those killed are buried in St-Valery-en-Caux Cemetery while Sgt Hewitt is buried in St-Desir War Cemetery. Six fatalities: Wilkinson + G Paterson, R Whire, A Thomas, LB Hewitt,GV Bently, EN Watson.

TH East survived and evaded capture.

14 630 Sqdn planes were deployed as part of a 1,019 aircraft attack on German strong points in the Normandy battle area. 614 Lancasters, 392 Halifaxes and 13 Mosquitoes in advance of allied ground troops participated. 10 (all Lancasters) were lost - 7 to German fighters, 2 to flak and 1 (presumably Wilkinson's) to an unknown cause.
