Military history

The Royal Welsh Fusiliers landed in Normandy on the 28th June 1944 and were involved in the fighting around Caen including Operation Greenline between 15th and 17th July.
Operation Greenline was to engage with the German Panzer divisions prior to Operation Goodwood which was due to start on the 18th July to enable the Allied forces to take the city of Caen.
At 15:30 hrs on the 15th July a large artillery bombardment of 450 guns commenced in the area around, Gavrus, Evrecy and Esquay-Notre-Dame. The Germans reacted quickly with their own massive artillery bombardment which seperated the Britiash forces into several isolated elements. By the dawn of the 16th both sides had suffered substancial losses. Field Marshal Montgomery relaunched the stalled offensive. On the 17th July SS Panzer divisions, Hohenstaufen and Frundsberg were engaged in battle and the British forces were prevented from taking Evrecy. The operation was not a success and led to severe losses, 3500 men were wounded, killed or taken prisoner whilst the Germans lost 2000 men.
