Son of John and Ruth Priestley. John died in 1929 leaving Ruth with several children.
John, Fred, George, Harry, Gladys, Lucy, Herbert, Arthur, Alfred and Ronald born between 1905 and 1928, but some had died young
The 1/6th Bn along with the South Staffordshire 5th and 2/6th battalions formed part of the 177th Brigade. They took part in Operation Overlord but they landed several days after the initial invasion on D-Day. They were part of the campaign to take Caen, Operation Charnwood, and the second battle of Odon (15/7 to 17/7/1944)
Alfred was one of the 10 men of his battalion who died on the 16th July.

Mrs Priestley of 1 Gilcroft Row, Mansfield has received news that her youngest son, Pte Alfred Priestley, aged 19 of the South Staffordshire Regt was killed in action in North West Europe. He worked at Eakring and was in the Home Guard before joining up. He had been in the forces for 1 year and 3 weeks.
