Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Wass of 17 Fourth Avenue, Clipstone.
Siblings: Grace, Fanny,George, Eric and Doris.
In 1921 Joseph was listed on the census as out of work miner at Southgate Colliery (Clowne) so like several others moved to Clipstone once Clipstone Colliery opened in the mid 1920's
John married Olive Cook in 1937 and their son, Trevor was born in 1938. In 1939 the family were living at 32 Church Road, Clipstone.
Olive remarried in 1946, to Richard Dillon.
His sister, Grace, was the widow of Thomas Henry Baxter who had been killed whilst serving with the Royal Army Service Corps, Air Despatch Company at Arnham during Operation Market Garden in September 1944.
The 30th Field Regimant served as part of the B.E.F in France in early 1940 before being evacuated. They later served in North Africa and on the Italian Campaign.
