When he was 14 years old he was working has a pit top labourer at Rufford Colliery, his father, James was also a pit top labourer at Rufford Colliery.
By 1939 Fred was working has a lorry driver.

His parents were James and Maria Newton, Maria died in 1907.
On the 1911 census Adeline Fletcher was living with the widowed James and Fred. Also in the household was Adeline's father and Edith Newton aged 1. Adeline married James in the summer of 1911, she was 22 years younger than James. They had several more children, Ivy died at or soon after birth in the summer of 1913, Gertrude died at or soon after her birth in late 1915, William Henry in 1918, Adeline in 1921, and James in 1924.
James snr died in 1938 aged 71.
On the 5th February 1927 Fred Fletcher Newton married Winifred Warsop at St John's Church, Mansfield. They were both living at 5 Plantation Row, Mansfield and Fred was working has a miner.
Their first daughter Joyce M was born in the summer of 1927, John J in 1929, Brenda J in September 1931, Pauline F in April 1939 and Joan in 1942. Brenda died in 1947 aged 15.
In 1939 the family were living at 18 Birks Road, Mansfield.
Winifred married Sidney Booth in 1951.
