
Bernard Shaw
In 1939 Bernard was training to be a Church of England priest at the Society of the Sacred Mission's college at Kelham Hall, Kelham, Newark. He was one of 139 men living at the college.

Son of George John and Harriet Shaw, of Kirklands Newland Crescent Foret Town, Forest Town, Nottinghamshire.
Siblings: George (1896), Walter (1904), Nellie (1910) and John (1920).
East Yorkshire D-Day Landings:
Between 04:30 and 06:00 hours the assault craft were lowered from Empire Battleaxe and HMS Glenearn for the 7 mile journey to the Red Queen section of Sword Beach. They landed under heavy mortar, machine-gun and artillery fire. They broke through to take Strong Point Cod and Strong Point Sole, 2 gun emplacements and then they took Daimler Battery. By 18:00 thay had taken all 3. They continued onto the village of St Aubin d'Arquenay before spending the night in a cornfield near the village of Hermanville.
The east Yorks had lost 5 officers and 60 men killed and 4 officers and 137 men wounded. They had taken 70 prisoners.
Bernard was one of the 5 officers killed on D-Day.
