Family history

Son of George Henry and Melissa Ann Woolley, of 87 Moor Street,Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
On the 1921 census they are living with Melissa's parents Henry and Melissa Hemstock. They had married on 28th March 1921 , Melissa was 21 years old and George Henry was 19. George was born a few weeks later in the summer of 1921. George appears to be their only child.
By 1939 Melissa was living with Reginald Farthing at 7 Commercial Street, Mansfield and she married him in 1941.

Military history

The 14th Bn of the Sherwood Foresters were sent to Anzio after the initial landings. By mid May plans were drawn up to break through the German defensive lines and to push on to Rome. The campaign started on the 23rd of May with the aim to split the German Forces line to enable a breakout from the beach head at Anzio, where the Allies had been held since January. The attack was successful with Rome being taken on the 4th June, but hard won. The 14th battalion alone lost 30 men between 24th May and 30th May.
