Military history

DURNBACH WAR CEMETERY Coll. grave 4. H. 3-7. Germany

Lancaster I LL805 took off 2154 27 April 1944 from Mildenhall to bomb Friedrichshafen. Shot down by a night- fighter and crashed into wooded country between Gottmadingen and Singen (Hohentwiel).

No survivors. Fatalities: Lee (AB) + SJR Soper (P), BH Watts (FE), RL Gibson (N), WJ Howerd (W/Op), D King (AG), G Wood (AG).

323 aircraft attacked the small town of Friedrichshafen. Deep into southern Germany in full moonlight, this operation was hazardous but the targets - important factories making gearboxes and engines for German tanks- meant the risk was taken. 1,234 tons of bombs were dropped during ahighly successful operation. 67% of the town's built up area was devastated. 136 people were killed and 375 injured. 655 houses were destroyed with 421 severely damaged. 18 Lancasters (5.6% of the attacking force) were lost. German officials later told the American bombing survey team that this was the 'most damaging raid on tank production of the war.' (Source: Middlebrook and Everitt, Bomber Command War Diaries p.501)
