Family history

Son of John Marriott and of Florence Marriott (nee Braybrook) of 2 Albert Street, Gedling.
Florence died in 1936, she was 25 years younger than John. In 1921 Florence's daughter, who was 18 years old, was living with them with her baby daughter, Edna . Florence wasn't married.
Also in the house was George William and his full sibling Thomas Ernest,born in 1918. Thomas and Edna where baptised together at All Hallows Church, Gedling on 8th September 1920.

In 1937 he married Dorothy Margaret Layton in Basford and they set up home at 6 Cress Street, Carlton. Dorothy married again in 1947 to Percy Baldwin.

Military history

The 14th Bn was raised in 1940 and saw service in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy. After service in North Africa they were deployed to Italy as part of the 1st armoured Deivision. They took part in the Anzio Campaign (Feb-May 1944), the most severe battle in Italy for the Sherwood Foresters and their casualty rate was one of the highest.
