Military history

In March 1944, the 2nd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment was deployed to the trench-and-mud warfare of the Anzio Beachhead in Italy. They served as a frontline infantry unit within the 17th Infantry Brigade of the British 5th Infantry Division.

Following fierce action during the Garigliano River crossing in January, the entire 5th Division was rushed to Anzio by sea in early-to-mid March to relieve the exhausted British 56th (London) Division.

Arrival at the Beachhead (Mid-March): The 2nd Battalion arrived at Anzio at a time when the massive German counter-offensives had ground to a halt, turning the battlefield into a static, claustrophobic war of attrition similar to the Western Front of WWI.

The "Wadi" Fighting: The battalion was immediately pushed into the frontline positions on the northern sector of the perimeter. This area was defined by deep, eroded ravines known as the "Wadis" (such as the Moletta River sector).

March 1944 was marked by bitter, close-quarters patrolling, routine mortar and artillery duels, and sniper fire. Both sides lived in shallow dugouts carved into the muddy walls of the ravines, exposed to relentless rain and freezing nights.
