He was the son of Edward and May Gertrude Tandy. He was the husband of Gwendoline Marion Tandy of Staythorpe Road, Averham, Nottinghamshire.

Military history

HM Motor Torpedo Boat 417

MTB 417 (BPB 72 feet-type class Motor Torpedo Boat) and MTB 418 and two other boats supported by three MGBs (Motor Gun Boat) vectored to intercept a convoy between Calais and Boulogne. Two MGBs become detached , the rest of the force approached but were detected and engaged by heavy gunfire from ships (Vorpostenboot) of the 18 Vorpostenflotille, Vp 1802 Wandrahm, Vp 1803 Le Havre de Grace, Vp 1804 Excellent , Vp 1810 Condor, Vp 1811 Sylt and Vp 1815 Loodsboot 6.

MTB 417 was hit by several 88mm shells from Vp 1810 Condor (sunk 2/6/1944) and Vp 1811 Sylt. MTB 417 burst into flames and sank with all hands. MTB 418 approached the position of the sinking but was beaten off by gunfire.
