Son of Ernest Arthur and Fanny Champion, of 68 Linden Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
In 1921 Ernest Arthur was a licence victuller running the Carpenter's Arms on Newgate Lane. He employed his wife, son Ernset Arthur jnr and niece, Hilda Tonks. Ernest snr died in 1937.
Siblings: Charles (1897), Ernest Arthur (1903), George (1912), Stanley (1915), Madge (1920) and Mary (1924).

Military history

The 2nd Battalion was sent to North Africa in early 1943 and took part in the latter stages of the Tunisia Campaign. They took part in the landings at Anzio from 22nd January 1944 to 5th June 1944.
