Son of John R and Ada Moakes of Mansfield. John had died in 1932 and Ada had married William Housley in 1932 and in 1939 they were living at 19 Grange Avenue, Mansfield.
Siblings: Gladys (1912-died 1913), twins Elsie and Gertie but they died at or soon after their birth in 1914. Irene was born in 1915. Ada had another daughter, Anne in 1934 with William Housley.
John married Eva Renshaw on 29th January 1944.

St Peter's Church was the scene of the pretty wedding last Saturday when Miss Eva Renshaw, daughter of Mr & Mrs Ernest Renshaw of 33 Grove Street, Mansfield was given away by his father, a well known tradesman in the town to Sgt Joan Moakes (R.A.F) son of Mr & Mrs W R Housley, 19 Grange Avenue, Mansfield. Attired in a dress of Nottingham lace with a head-dress of feathers and veil and carrying a bouquet of pink carnations. The bride was attended by Mrs E Booth (sister), Mrs J Jackson (friend) and Miss Anne Housley (sister of bridegroom).
The duties of the bestman were carried out by Mr Jesse Townsend and groomsmen were O J Pegy and P Clarke. Over 40 guests were entertained at the reception held at St Peter's Insitution, the honeymoon being spent in north Devon
They had only been married 18 days before John was killed.

The funeral took place last Monday at the Mansfield Cemetery preceded by a service at St Aiden's Church.
The deceased who was killed in a flying accident on the 15th when returning from operations.was 22 years of age and was msrried to Miss E Renshaw on the 29th January. Miss Renshaw is serving with the W.A.A.F. He was educated at High Oakham School and prior to joining the RAF in 1941 he was employed by Mansfield Shoe Co.
