William Herbert Spibey

He was the son of May Spibey and the brother of Nora Spibey of 55, Dorset Street, Radford Radford, Nottingham.
'This aircraft took off Chedburgh for a night cross country, base - Land's End - Dulverton - Reading - and thence to Goole before returning to base. On regaining Chedburgh, the crew acknowleged their landing instructions but at 2326 the Stirling ploughed into trees 400 yards SSW of Haegrave Rectory, a few miles NNW of the airfield. It is beliebed the pupil pilot was at the controls and he may have been disoriented by the airfield's lighting system. The two injured airmen died soon after the crash. Five are buried in Cambridge City Cemetery while the other s were claimed by their relatives. P/O Johnson RNZAF, whose DFC had been Gazetted on 19 October 1943, had flown with 218 Squadron and, in total, he had logged just over six hundred flying hours.' WR Chorley vol 8 p.84
