He was the son of Albert and Alice Clements and the brother of Albert Clements (born 1922) of 18, Scargill Street, Eastwood in 1921 and 20, New Eastwood by 1939.
The Mention in Despatches: He was awarded a Mention in Despatches (MiD) on 20 December 1940, early in the conflict, for his notable actions and devotion to duty.Given that he earned this honour in 1940, it is highly likely he participated in the regiment's fierce early-war campaigns, such as the Battle of Hook of Holland or the intense defensive actions at Boulogne and Dunkirk before the regiment was evacuated back to the United Kingdom.
In November 1943, the 2nd Battalion, Irish Guards was based in the United Kingdom, undergoing intense conversion and tactical training as an armoured unit. Assigned to the 5th Guards Armoured Brigade within the Guards Armoured Division, the battalion spent the month mastering mechanized warfare ahead of the planned Allied invasion of North West Europe.
