When the 1939 England and Wales Register was taken on the 29th September 1939 Frank had already enlisted into the RAF and was awaiting deployment to 46 squadron.

Family history

Son of Alfred Charles and Mary Ann Middleton, of 68 Smith Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
Siblings: John (1913), David (1919) and Barbara (1921). David was killed whilst serving in North Africa with the Leicestershire Regiment.
Half siblings: George Middleton (1905) and from his mother's first marriage to Tom Collingham, who died aged 31 in 1909, Marjorie (1904), Stephen Rufus (1905), William (1906) and Alfred (1907).

Frank married Annie Smith in 1940 and their son, Frank W was born in late 1942 so he was about a year old when his father died.

Military history

Catalina, serial number VA728. The Catalina was a flying boat that was used for anti submarine patrols and Air-Sea Rescue (ASR) patrols.
302 Ferry Training Unit was based at Oban.
Frank's aircraft crash landed in the Firth of Lorne off the Isle of Mull in the dark when returning from a ASR patrol.

Extra information

David, Frank's younger brother was killed during Operation Crusader, to lift the Seige of Tobruk, on 25th November 1941.
