Military history

HMS Charybdis, a Dido Class cruiser. She was sunk whilst trying to stop the German ship, Munsterland, which was trying to get a cargo of latex and metals through the blockade. HMS Charybdis was hit by several torpedoes from German torpedo boats T23 and T27. She sank with in 30 mins and 406 men were lost, many of whom washed ashore on Gurnsey.
The German forces occuping Gurnsey accorded the men full military funerals. Out of loyalty 5000 Channel Islander attended the funerals and 900 wreaths were laid and as a result all subsquent funerals were closed to civilians.
