He was the son of Frank and Ethel Bonser of 77, Ilkeston Road, Trowell, Nottinghamshire.
In October 1943, the 1/5th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) consisted largely of men who had been captured by the Japanese following the fall of Singapore in February 1942.
During October 1943, these imprisoned soldiers faced extreme hardships as the notorious Burma-Siam Railway—on which thousands of Allied POWs were forced to labour—was finally completed.
October 1943 marked the completion of the 1,250-mile railway line. Overwork, severe malnutrition, and tropical diseases like cholera and malaria claimed the lives of many prisoners during this period.
Commanding Officer Col. H.H. Lily worked to keep groups of Foresters organized and supported under brutal camp conditions.
