Lancaster III JA850 took off at 2102hrs 14 Aug 1943 from Oakington. Crashed at Sassenay (Sassenay Loire) 8 km NE of chalon France.

Flight Lieutenant S C Matkin, Pilot Officer J W O'Hara (RCAF), Flight Lieutenant R C C Taylor (RNZAF), Flying Officer K A Gough, Flight Sergeant A Whatmore, Pilot Officer J B Paterson, Warrant Officer J H Dugan (RAAF), Flight Sergeant A A Balcombe (RCAF): killed; Lancaster JA850, 7 Squadron, aircraft failed to return from an operational flight.

Bomber Command attacked Milan with 843 aircraft in thre raids between October 12th and 15th 1943. 7 Sqdn contributed 43 planes to these attacks. Lancaster III A850 was the only aircraft lost during the second raid launched on October 14th. During August 1943, according to local reports, 4 major factories including the Alfa Romeo works, the main railway station and La Scala Opera House were all badly hit. 1,174 Milan citizens died during 1943 air raids, most probably during these three attacks.
