Nowell was the wireless operator aboard Halifax II BB285 which 'took off from Marston Moor at 1322 and crashed into the village sewerage works at Spofforth midway between Harrogate and Weatherby. The cause of the crash was traced to a pin working loose in the mechanism controlling the rudders, thus leading to a complete failure of the system. It is also reported that the starboard outer engine was on fire, prior to the crash and flames from the motor may have burned into the aileron controls.'
