Son of William Arthur and Mary Ridley, of 82 Python Hill Road, Rainworth.
Mary was James' step-mother. Elsie Eliza, nee McCummings, had died in 1919 when James was under 1 year old.
William and Elsie Eliza had married on 22nd February 1908 in Nottingham.

Mary, nee Whitney, married William Arthur in 1923. Her first husband, George Mayes had served with the 9th Glasgow Highlanders and died on 8th February 1919.

Full Sibling: Elsie May born 1/9/1908, Half Siblings: Dora E Mayes born in 1/1/1917 she was disabled and died in 1945 aged 28 and Arthur Ridley born 29/8/1925.

In 1921 James was living with his widowed father at his paternal grand-parents, William and Elizabeth Ridley at 23 George Street, Mansfield.
