Family history

Son of Harry Marshall Whiting and of Nora May Whiting (nee Featherstone), of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
Sibling Harry Francis born in Hull on 22/12/1920.
Harry was a seaman from Hull and had served in the Marchant Navy during WW1. Nora died in 1925 and has the CWGC entry lists Norman's uncle it is probable that Nora's brother John took in Norman when she died.

Took off from Leeming at 23:24 hrs on 26/6/1943 was shot down by a German night fighter and crashed at Kaathoven, Belguim.
Raid on Mulheim, 557 aircraft 35 losses.
A thin layer of cloud hampered PFF (Pathfinders) marking efforts which were netherless accurate. As a result the bombing was concentrated and deverstated this small town. All communication were cut from Oberhausen on which Mulheim was dependent for emergency services. 578 deaths and 1135 homes destroyed. A British report put the damage at 64% of the town.
