Military history

He was taken prisoner by the japanese at the fall of Singapore on 15th Feruary 1942.
Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 17/1/1946: Died in Jap Camp.
Mr & Mrs F Oscroft of 3 Holden Street, Mansfield have received notification that their second son, Pte Cyril Oscroft died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in December 1943. He was in the R.A.O.C and was taken prisoner at Singapore. Educated at Moor Lane Schools, Mansfield he was later employed by a local haulage firm.
Mr & Mrs Oscroft have received a letter from Malcolm McCumskay of Middlesex who was taken prisoner at the same time as Pte Oscroft, Biff Cullen , Ambrose Smith, Spike Parnwell and several other local lads.
In his letter Pte McCumskay who lost his right leg says after being taken prisoner they were all sent to Thailand to work on the Thialand-Burma railway. Pte McCumskay would be pleased to hear from old Mansfield pals who were with him at the fall of Singapore.

Extra information

Biff Cullen is Edward Cullen and features on the St Augustine's Memorail and in the Mansfield Book of Remebrance.
Ambrose Smith died during the attack on Singapore and is also commemorated in the Mansfield Book Of Remembrance.

Malcolm McCumskay served in the R.A.O.C along side Cyril.

In the newspaper report Cyril's death is given as December 1943 but on official records it is stated as being in June 1943.
