Son of John Edmund and Lilly Chambers, of Brinsley, Nottinghamshire.
Husband of Iris Chambers, of Langley Mill, Derbyshire.
Served with the 4th (Bulwell) Battalion, Nottinghamshire Home Guard, Sherwood Foresters.
The Nottinghamshire Home Guard was formed in May 1940 after the re-designation of the Local Defence Volunteer (LDV) Companies.
They were affiliated to the Sherwood Foresters whose cap badge they wore.
There were 14 Battalions in all :
1st (Nottingham City) Battalion.
2nd (West Bridgford) Battalion.
3rd (Beeston) Battalion.
4th (Bulwell) Battalion.
5th (Daybrook & Bestwood) Battalion.
6th (Mansfield) Battalion.
7th (Sutton In Ashfield) Battalion.
8th (Clipstone) Battalion.
9th (Worksop) Battalion.
10th (Retford) Battalion.
11th (Newark) Battalion.
12th (Bassetlaw) Battalion (Based at Worksop).
13th (26 GPO) Battalion (Based at Nottingham).
14th (Trent River Patrol) Battalion (Based at Newark).
They were comprised of Platoons of men in Reserve Occupations and those who were either over age or under age for active service.
