The Nottinghamshire Home Guard was formed in May 1940 after the re-designation of the Local Defence Volunteer (LDV) Companies.
They were affiliated to the Sherwood Foresters whose cap badge they wore.

They were comprised of Platoons of men in Reserve Occupations and those who were either over age or under age for active service.
