He was the son of John and Sarah Thacker and the brother of Thomas and Rosalie Thacker of 40, Dalesworth Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield.
Stephen Thacker's death is directly tied to a notable wartime accident at the HMS Fernieness Range in East Lothian, Scotland.The Incident: On 27 April 1943, an aircraft crashed into an area involving military or civilian personnel on the ground or in transit.Injuries: He sustained severe injuries during the disaster in the Edinburgh area.
He succumbed to his injuries on the same day at the Astley Ainslie Institution in Edinburgh. Fellow SS Rother crew member George Alan Osburn (alternatively spelled Osborne) and a civilian coach driver, David Mathieson, also died because of the same accident.
CommemorationBecause of his merchant service, he is officially recognized as a Commonwealth war casualty.He is buried in his home county at Sutton-In-Ashfield Cemetery, Nottinghamshire (Section A, Grave 11555)
