Military history

In April 1943, the 6th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers was heavily engaged in the final stages of the Tunisian Campaign in North Africa. Operating under the 38th (Irish) Infantry Brigade within the 78th "Battleaxe" Division, the battalion fought through intense and costly mountain battles to break Axis defensive lines blocking the Allied advance toward Tunis.

The Assault on Djebel el Mahdi (7 April)

Following a grueling all-night march through wet cornfields, the battalion launched a coordinated assault against heavily fortified German positions at Djebel el Mahdi.
• The Terrain: The troops encountered extensive minefields, razor-wire fortifications, and steep wadis.
• The Outcome: Moving up in pitch darkness, the Inniskillings successfully captured their main objective halfway up the mountain by early morning, clearing the way for the 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers to secure the summit later that afternoon.

This was a fierce all-night assault through heavy Axis minefields, razor wire, and defensive mortar fire to clear the lower ridges of the mountain. He was one of several men from the 6th Battalion lost on the opening day of this breakthrough operation.
