Military history

Ernest Hunt joined A Squadron Sherwood Rangers in the early 1930s.
Upon the outbreak of war he went to Palestine with the Regiment in 1940 and then served as a coastal gunner during the siege of Tobruk the following year. After mechanization as a Tank Regiment he was a tank commander during the battles of Alam Halfa and el Alamein in Egypt in September and October 1942. On 6th April the 8th Army broke through at the Gabes Gap and begun to pursue the Germans north towards Tunis. Sgt Hunt was a troop leader, commanding a troop of six tanks in A Squadron killed, leading his troop in action, during the Battle of Wadi Akarit.
