He attended the National Boys' School. Upon leaving at the age of 14 years, he entered the employment of of the Northern Rubber Co. and continued at the works until joining the Sherwood Foresters on March 15th, 1940.

Family history
He was the son of Gervase and Emma Shaw of 15, Hirst Road, Retford.
Military history
Gervase Shaw was invalided out of the Sherwood Foresters in October 1942, after seeing service in Cyprus and Egypt. Through illness, caused whilst on active service, he was sent to various military hospitals in South Africa.
He died suddenly on Monday 29th March 1943, aged 26.
