He left school at Ilkeston, joined and left the RAF to become a BOAC pilot. He rejoined the airforce as war broke out.

He was a keen sportsman, winning trophies for swimming and boxing.

Family history

He was the son of Joseph Baker Duro and Harriet Duro and the brother of Edward Augustus, Cyril, Reginald, Laurence, Mabel Ellen, Beatrice, Nelson and Frank Duro. In 1911 and 1921, they lived at 113, Park Road, Ilkeston. Hector Duro and Dolores Joan King were married at Nottingham in 1928 and they had three children - Michael, Stephen and Stella. They lived at 10, Sutton Passeys Crescent, Wollaton Park, Nottingham.

Military history

Stirling R9262 took off 1709 21 Dec 1942 from Oakington. Shot down by an Me110 and crashed at Seraincourt (Ardennes) 16 km NW of Rethel France. Flying Officer H Duro (Pilot), Sergeant G R Dickenson, Sergeant A T Carpenter: killed; Sergeant P G E Ross: prisoner of war; Sergeant T I Boddy, Flying Officer F E Lewis (RCAF), Sergeant H L McBeath (RCAF): evaded capture.

Nine 7 Sqdn Stirlings were part of a 137 ac raid on Munich. Three failed to return. 8.8% of the attacking force was lost (12 ac – 8 Lancasters, 3 Stirlings & 1 Wellington). Initially this was claimed as a successful operation but, according to Middlebrook and Everitt ‘their photographs showed that all or most of the bombs fell in open country, possibly attracted by a decoy site.’
