Son of William Obadiah Lee and Ada Sarah Lee, of 30 Common Lane, Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire.
Siblings: Violet Amy (1911), Charlie (1913), Susan Hannah (1916), Phyllis (1916), Margaret (1923) and Frank (1926).
Baptised at All Saint's Hucknall/Huthwaite on Ash Wednesday 5th March 1919. They were living at 3 Carnavon Road, Huthwaite.

Military history

S.S. Barberrys was a merchant ship, it was at least 60 years old. It had left Halifax, Nova Scotia and ran into an extreme storm and due to severity of the weather she returned to port. She was hit by a torpedo before she made it and sank within 2 minutes. Only 7 men out of a crew of 64 made it to the lifeboat. After drifting for 5 days they were picked up by an American ship. 4 of the survivors died in a fire at the hostal they were taken to. A further survivor was found on some floating wreakage.

John's uncle, also called John Walter Lee was killed in France on 4th August 1915 whilst serving with the Sherwood Foresters.
