Blyskawica joined in the liberation efforts performed by the Allies, first during the landing at Algiers. 12th November 1942 while giving fire support to the beach area 'Beer Green' in the region of Sidi Ferruchon a raid of over 40 bombers attacked both landing ground and shipping. In this action the ship suffered significant damage and losses, 20% of the crew either wounded or killed. Blyskawica claimed one Ju88 shot down.
ORP Blyslawica: (Polish for Lightening) was a destroyer in the Polish Navy. On the 30th August 1939, along with the Gorm and the Burza, she sailed from the Baltic to Britain to escape being taken by German Forces. She docked at Leith on the 1st of September and was absorbed into the Royal Navy's Home Fleet. She took part in the Norwegian Campaign and the Operation Dynamo, the Dunkirk evacuation. Her main duties were convoy escort and patrol duties. During the course of the war she sailed 148,000 miles, escorted 83 convoys and carried out 108 patrols, sunk 2 ships, damaged 3 u-boats and shot down at least 4 aircraft. She lost 5 crew members and 48 casualties.
On the 5th November 1942 she was based at Gibralter and was supporting the Eastern Task Force. On the 12th November the Blyslawica was bombed and 3 crew members were killed, Geoffrey and 2 Polish sailors.
