Military history

William took up his posting in July 1941 and flew on 28 operations with 49th Squadron.

Target: Genoa. Lancaster I R5670 took off 2205 6 Nov 1942 from Wyton. On return the crew attempted to land at Mildenhall but overshot the approach and crashed near Landbeach at 0705 'Attempting to go round again,' as 83 Sqdn ORB put it (AIR27/686/70), the Lancaster stalled on a steep turn, crashed near the airfield and burst into flames. No survivors.
