Educated at the National School, he was a member of the 1st Retford Company of the Boys' Brigade. For some time he was in the choir at St. Catherine's Mission Church.

After leavıng school he went to work at the Carr Foundry,and was later in the employ of M W. J. Jenkins and Co., Ltd.

Bernard Throstle was keenly interested in football and cricket. He regularly acted as umpire for the Wednesday matches of Retford C.C., and in a similar capacity he assisted at Evening League matches.

Throstle was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Throstle. 1, West Street, Retford.

Military history

He was killed during the Battle of El Alamein. His family was assured he died valiantly and without suffering.
