Military history

Arthur was inspecting a Wellington bomber (Serial Number Z8375) at RAF Cranwell when a hand starter magneto sparked and a petrol cn ignited. Arthur tried to drag the can clear of the aircraft but received serious burns.

We regret to announce the death of A.C.1 Arthur Ernest Bristowe the beloved son of Mrs A Bristowe and the late Mr A E Bristowe of 2 Meadow Avenue, Mansfield who passed away in Grimsby Hospital as the result of burns sustained in course of his duties in an aerodrome in Lincolnshire.
On the 24th June he was cleaning a magneto with petrol when a spark ignitad the spirit. Its believed that the spark was caused by a piece of the machinary carried by one of the men who accidentally slipped onthe platform on which the receptical containing the petrol was positioned. Bristowe tried to get to the tin of petrol away but it spilled over hi, and he was burned on the face, arms and chest.
He was admitted to Grimsby General Hospital, where everything was done for him and he appeared to have improved slightly until wednesday last, when pneumonia and toxic symptons became apparent. Although the necessary treatment was administered he passed away at 9pm the same evening.
Arthur Bristowe was a native of Mansfield and he received his education at King Edward's and maltby Schools and afterwards served with Mr Hutchinson, decorator. Ten years ago he started his own business which he carried on until joining the RAF in February 1941.
