Lived at 39 Church St. [e.1939], 4 Clayton Place, Newgate St., N.L. [n.e.p.2.7.1942]. Son of Herbert Monsheimer (d.1914) & Margaret Monsheimer (d.1937), of 27 Marcus St. [e.1933]; husband of Gertrude Monsheimer (née Anthony0[Nottingham.m.1934] (d.1945), of 39 Church St. [e.1939]. His widow remarried in 1944 and went to live in Middlesborough but died there in childbirth in December 1945. His father died in the First World War. His mother married Stephen Smith [Nottingham.m.1931].

Military history

Killed on 6th June 1942 during the battle of 'Knightsbridge' near Bir Hacheim, Libya. No known grave; name included on Alamein Memorial, Egypt.

During the Battle of Knightsbridge the South Notts Hussars suffered extremely heavy casualties which effectively wiped out the regiment.

Before the war William Monsheimer had been a territorial soldier attached to the South Notts Hussars and was among the first to volunteer for active service.
