He was the son of Albert and Lily Brown of Nottingham; husband of Irene Brown of Radford Nottingham.
In 1942, 276 Battery of the 68th (North Midland) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery was heavily engaged in the Western Desert campaign in North Africa. Originally a Territorial Army unit raised in Nottingham, the most significant single-day loss for the Battery occurred on 10 April 1942. A group of men from this Nottingham-based unit were killed during combat operations in Egypt. The casualties from this date—including Lance Bombardier Alexander Redgate, Gunner Frederick Williamson, Gunner Ronald Brown, and Gunner John Wilfred Bowles—are buried at the Halfaya Sollum War Cemetery near the Egypt–Libya border.
