He attended Thrumpon School, and upon leaving was employed at the Northern Rubber Works until war broke out. He played for the Works Football Club.

Family history

Harry Windle, was the youngest child of Frank and Nellie Windle. He was the brother of George Ernest, Emily, Nellie,Grace, Mabel, Mary Elizabeth and Frank Windle. In 1921, they lived at 11, Thrumpton Land, Retford, Nottinghamshire. Nellie later lived at 107, Ollerton Road, Retford.

Military history

He joined the Sherwood Foresters when 21 years of age, and was in the evacuation at Dunkirk, and had to swim for his life. Subsequently he came on leave to Retford. He was serving in Malaya, when the garrison of Singapore capitulated on February 15th 1942.
Frank Windle was initially posted missing.
