Family history

Son of Alfred Charles and Mary Ann Middleton, of 68 Smith Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
Siblings: John (1913), Frank (1917) and Barbara (1921). Frank was killed on 4th November 1943 whilst serving with the RAF.
David also had half siblings, George Middleton born 1904 and from his mother's first marriage to Tom Collingham who had died in 1909 aged 31, Marjorie (1904), Stephen Rufus (1905), William (1906) and Alfred (1907). She married Alfred Charles in 1912.

Military history

The Seige of Tobruk lasted 242 days from April 1941 to November 1941. Operation Crusader started on the 18th November when the 8th Army based itself 30 miles from Tobruk.Over the next few days there was heavy fighting around Tobruk but on the 27th New Zealand, Australian and British forces breeched the German encirclement and entered Tobruk.

David was one of 12 men from the Leicestershire Regiment to be killed on the 25th November 1941.

David's older brother, Frank died on 4th November 1943 whilst serving with the RAF.
