Douglas Attewell was an iron works audit clerk in 1939.

Family history

He was the son of Arthur John and Annie Attewell and the brother of Margaret and Sylvia Attewell. In 1939, they lived at 70, Harrington Drive, Lenton, Nottingham.

Military history

Beaufort I N1158

Obtained his wings and commissioned November 1940 (LT 27 page 18). Killed whilst flying Beaufort Mark one, registration : N1158.
Flew into a hill 2 miles south of st. Eval at Tolcarne, St. Mawgan in bad weather during a transit flight from Thorney Island, Hampshire to St. Eval.
Two other crew members were killed :
Service number, 1355107, Sergeant, (Wireless Operator) who is buried in Urray New Parish Churchyard, Urray, Highlands, Scotland.
Service number, R/60108 (Royal Canadian Air Force), Sergeant, George Patrick Whicher who is buried in St. Mawgan (Lantherne) Roman Catholic Cemetery, Cornwall.
One other crew member survived : Sergeant Townend, the aircraft was a total wreck.
Pilot Offier Attewell was reported as "Killed on active service" on Air Ministry communique number 77 dated 21st August 1941.
He is buried in Holy Trinity Churchyard, Lenton, Nottingham.
Grave Reference : 291.
The Personal Inscription reads : " Duty nobly done".
